The arrest took place the same day he handed over to now Governor, Charles Soludo of Anambra State on March 16, 2022. Willie Obiano was arrested while try to board a flight from Lagos Airport to Houston, Texas USA.

Under Nigerian's 1999 Constitution as amended, Governors, the President, and the Vice-President has immunity while in office. But once they leave office, they lose their immunity.
